ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR—
Entertainment Weekly, BuzzFeed, Shelf Awareness

“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.”
“I live for you,” I say sadly.
Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power.  He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

My friends and my little brother had been recommending this book to me for MONTHS I finally got it decided to give it a shot (I don’t read very often if at all) and I couldn’t put it down.

I slightly regret reading so late considering how recommended it was. This is exactly what I need. To be consumed and obsessed. The class system by colors is an easy follow but the color scheme of everyone looking alike is truly my only complaint. So I had to Pinterest fan art of the characters to remember details, as my memory does not like everyone who is of the same hair, eyes and skin tone
  • Incredible.

I am relatively new to reading fiction as an adult and even more so to Sci-Fi. This is my first book of the genre. I come from reading Tolkien and Sanderson. Every book I read I do research into it to make sure it meets certain criteria i look for in a book. This book checked all the boxes. So when I started reading this book from a lot of positive reviews. I was excited. The language Brown uses was a little of a stretch for me and this is my first 1st Person POV for a read which was an adjustment. But by chapter 6 I was definitely hooked but I still struggled with his pacing. There are moments I felt he should have stayed in the moment longer but then he takes time to explain things in depth that I felt needed but a brief explanation. I kept pushing through. I didn’t find myself dreading the book but I wasn’t hooked like I was with Mistborn series. But as I kept reading. Around halfway I started to actually adjust to his writing style, the POV, the Roman themed names and background. And I can say as a new reader. This book really was good. I’d give it a 4.3. I’m excited to read Golden son. Give this a read. I am glad I persevered.

Somewhat generic world building, lots of familiar tropes but still an enjoyable read.

Made me feel excitement for reading that I haven’t felt since I was a kid reading Hunger Games and Divergent for the first time. I seriously couldn’t put this book down. Recommending this book to all my boys.

What a book!, what an introduction to what I can honestly hope is a great series. I’ve never finished a book this fast.
